Nightway / Orquesta El Macabeo / Her Spectacles & The Phoenix Foundation / Expert Timing

Haven't done a 7"/ EP post for a while, so here are four completely unrelated shorter releases covering Synthpop, Salsa, Melodic Hardcore, and "Bubblegrunge" Power Pop. Enjoy!

Nightway - V EP

This is (unsurprisingly) the fifth EP from these Long Island Synthpop New Wave kings, just released yesterday and due out soon on Dead Broke Rekerds. I previously posted their 4 other EPs, and this one continues their fine form. Special mention goes to the lyrics of "Evaporate" with "I'm so fucking sick of this quarantine" being a line we can probably all get behind. Part of me wants a Nightway full-length, but another part of me just wants them to keep releasing these wonderful EPs!

Orquesta El Macabeo - El Sueño b/w Cogiendo Pon 7"

Puerto Rico's Orquesta el Macabeo are a salsa group whose members primarily come from punk and ska bands (which is probably how they popped up on my radar). This 7" was put out to support their album "El Entierro" and features two songs from that record. Apparently their music doesn't go down well with Salsa purists, but for the rest of us, this is pretty fun!

Her Spectacles / The Phoenix Foundation Split 7"

A cracking split 7" of amazing gruff melodic hardcore from Japan's Her Spectacles and Finland's The Phoenix Foundation. I actually mentioned this 7" as an afterthought when I posted about The Phoenix Foundation's "No Love Lost", but it deserves a bit more than that. Their two songs here are maybe a little poppier than normal, but still have their distinctive sound. Speaking of "sounds", I'm a huge fan of the sound of the Japanese bands that Snuffy Smile used to release. Waterslide Records, who co-released this, have taken on their mantle, so it's no surprise that I love the two Her Spectacles tracks here.

Expert Timing - Whichever, Whatever EP

Another act showing up on this page for the second time (I have already posted about their 2018 album "Glare"),  bubblegrunge power poppers Expert Timing put out this 5-track EP last year. Maybe the colourful cover is playing tricks on me, but I swear this effort is brighter and more poppy than that aforementioned full-length. I gotta be honest, I love both releases, and this is a wonderfully complete and very satisfying EP.
