The Phoenix Foundation - No Love Lost

Just to be clear (cos it's not gonna sound like it) I'm a big fan, but damn, Finland's The Phoenix Foundation are a frustrating band.

Sharing a name with a major-label (and far more popular) New Zealand act isn't ideal, and makes finding info on them difficult at times, and their albums themselves can be exasperating; they're almost all shorter than conventional records, and often share motifs and sometimes whole songs between them. "Formulaic" often doesn't have the best connotations, yet is appropriate here.

And still, I can't stop buying their records, something I've been doing ever since the wonderful Newest Industry Records (RIP) co-released their band's debut with Combat Rock Industry in 2003.

This is their 2011 effort, their 4th full-length out of the 7 released so far (in-amongst a ton of singles, EPs, and splits) and it sounds pretty much like their other records; mid-paced emotional melodic hardcore with a distinctive guitar sound (and some fun solos), slightly gravelly vocals, and the ability to distil and effortlessly bring to the fore the emotional content of each song, no matter the length.

Granted it often feels like the album is over before it's begun, but whilst it is around it's a great listen, and if you like what you hear there's quite a catalogue to explore.
