Released just yesterday, this is a collection of alternative ("garage") and live versions of songs taken from this Montrรฉal chillout group's last album "Oncle Jazz", plus the older cuts "Lauren" & "Break for Lovers".
And I wasn't going to post it, given that I already posted about their last album and these are (almost) the same songs. But then I realised there were several good reasons to change my mind.
One, this is a new release, and it's always nice to write about and share those. But, more importantly, one of my main criticisms of "Oncle Jazz" was how there was a fair bit of filler in amongst some amazing songs, and this record addresses that, with a cohesive collection that's only real flaw is omitting the brilliant "Pines".
Aside from a little too much reverb at times, the "garage" songs all sound great, and segue seamlessly into the live versions; you can barely tell the difference.
What we're left with is a stellar chillout / downtempo record, a single album's "greatest hits" if you will, with the alternative versions different enough to interest those already familiar with the originals, and the songwriting strong enough to garner new fans.
I just wish it had "Pines" on it...
