Jeff Rosenstock's last album "POST-" dropped on New Year's day 2018, with no prior warning, no hype, and lo and behold he's just pulled the same trick again with "NO DREAM', which was just suddenly released yesterday.
I posted about Jeff's album "WORRY." back in March and also recently about previous band Bomb the Music Industry!, but I can't resist sharing this new release as well, especially as it's something rather special.
Jeff's earlier albums are wonderful collections of great songs, but with the exception of the medley from "WORRY.", they are primarily that - collections of songs. "POST-", on the other hand, is a truly cohesive album, and one that works best when listened to as a whole. With "NO DREAM", Jeff has managed to produce an album with that same cohesive feel, yet brimming with stand out songs; an impressive but very natural progression from what's come before.
In an article for his US label Polyvinyl, he's quoted as saying, "Music is all vocabulary - you learn new words but you don’t forget the old ones". This rings true with 54 second opener "NO TIME", in which he certainly hasn't forgotten the old words, but there is definitely some new vocabulary here as well; the songs are generally more intricate, with a plethora of memorable moments in most of them. One thing that definitely hasn't changed is Jeff's frenetic energy.
I could go and pick out highlights, but as clichรฉd as it is to say, I'd be describing every song on the album; each song belongs here, each has something to offer. Jeff has written a record that is pertinent to our times, heartfelt and genuine (two words I'd use to describe everything he does to be honest), emotive, progressive, and thrilling in its execution, from the garish artwork through to that lone "cool" that brings this fantastic record to a close.
