Post left up for posterity

Singer-songwriter Lauren Hoffman has been releasing albums of her slightly off-kilter quirky alt-folk/pop/rock off and on for over 20 years; her first album "Megiddo" came out back in 1997 on Virgin Records, after which the major label unceremoniously dumped her.

Subsequent records have been released independently, from 1999's excellent "From The Blue House" (which was recently re-released for its 20th anniversary) all the way up to last year's "Mercury Girls", which possibly would have been more appropriate to post given that it's her current record.

Instead, I've chosen the 2006 album "Choreography", because it's my personal favourite. Plus, Lauren writes on her Bandcamp that it's the one she's most proud of (although maybe that description hasn't been updated in a while).

It's also the most varied yet stylistically-coherent album she's released, in no small part due to the drum machine and light electronic/synth touches that fortunately haven't aged badly at all. Even if they had, the songwriting is so strong it wouldn't have mattered.

Picking highlights is difficult; opener "Broken" and anthem "White Sheets" are both early contenders, but then "Another Song About The Darkness" has one of the most satisfying "F bombs" (and is also just a beautiful song), and there's the gorgeous melancholy of closer "Joshua"... And that's only mentioning four songs.

It's a very strong and well put-together record.
