husband&wife - Dark Dark Woods

Bloomington, Indiana is a place that I've been aware of for a while, home as it is (or was) to some great punk and folk-punk bands such as Defiance, Ohio and indeed Dead Beach (who I posted about previously), but it also turns out it was home to indie rock luminaries husband&wife.

This is a reissue of their 3rd album, and features a different version of "You Remain Unloved" (a song originally on their 2nd record) plus a brass instrumental outro as a bonus track. Also available is the remix album that accompanied this reissue.

The undoubted "hit" of the album is "I Got Fat", a 3¼ minute gem of an indie pop anthem that sets off in one direction then about turns. There are a couple of other songs that are almost as immediate (I'm thinking "Support Yourself" and "I'll Avenue Body, Graceland Lord, I'll Avenue Life"), but the majority here are slow burners, and show off the band's range.

The sheer quality is plain to hear and much of what's on offer here is delicate, poignant, and quite beautiful; this one is very much worth checking out.
