The Once Over Twice - Special Moments to Detonate Themselves

Named for an X song and wearing Fugazi influences on both sleeves, these guys popped up on my radar in the early '00s on a sampler CD from Org Records, for whom they recorded an EP before releasing this rather splendid full-length on the excellent In At The Deep End Records.

I liked them so much I attempted to put them on in Aberystwyth as part of their tour with The Letters Organize, only for the tour promoter to pull both bands once he realised he'd made a mistake and previously booked them to play elsewhere.

As for the record, it's full of bangers, with energetic, angular melodicism and shouty yet tuneful vocals. The Once Over Twice mixed post-hardcore with punk and even a little emo to create something that felt truly groundbreaking at the time (and still sounds pretty great today). Most of the songs culminate in some damn fine high points, and there's more than enough variation to keep things interesting as it hurtles along, resulting in an album that certainly still deserves to be heard.
