On 1st April this year Jeff Rosenstock posted about "SKA DREAM", a re-recording of his awesome record "NO DREAM" from last year but, y'know, ska, with the artwork with two skankers on the roof of the house of the original artwork and the check-board text that looked more akin to a transparency layer. Now even though Jeff's roots are very much in ska, most folks (including myself) dismissed it given the date, enjoyed the joke, and then didn't give it much further thought.
Well, in the ultimate musical switcheroo, it turns out the damn thing is real, suddenly just appearing digitally today with vinyl due September, and complete with "skaltered" song titles; this is not a throwaway release, and features a ton of folks such as (excuse the copypasta) Jer Hunter (JER, Skatune Network, We Are The Union), Rick Johnson (Mustard Plug), Laura Stevenson, Ara Babajian (The Slackers, Leftover Crack), Boboso, Sean Bonnette (AJJ), George Clarke (Deafheaven), David Combs (Bad Moves), Chris Farren, Augusta Koch (Gladie, Cayetana), Angelo Moore (Fishbone), Franz Nicolay, nonregla, Elise Okusami (Oceanator), Mike Park (Bruce Lee Band, Skankin Pickle, Asian Man Records), PUP, Anika Pyle (Katie Ellen, Chumped) & Shannon Toombes.
As to the album itself, when a ton of talented folks come together with an on-the-face-of-it bonkers idea, and then pour their hearts and souls into making it as brilliant as can be, and are working with an already-stonking batch of songs, well that was always gonna be a strong recipe. And that heart and soul is very much evident on this recording.
SKA DREAM will be a joy for anyone who loved the original, but I'd have no qualms recommending it to someone not familiar with that album - as long as they're open to a little ska of course!
