Radical Face - The Junkyard Chandelier

(see bottom of post for download link)

For my money, Ben Cooper is one of the most accomplished songwriters of our time, and under the pseudonym of Radical Face has released a plethora of work, in addition to collaborating on a number of other projects, including the excellent Electric President.

Here we have his first album, recorded before breakout record "Ghost" (which just had its 10 year reissue, and featured the song "Welcome Home" that was used in a number of adverts and TV shows). To my knowledge, "The Junkyard Chandelier" never received an official release, instead being hosted on the Radical Face website until a redesign. But thanks to the Internet Archive's Wayback Machine it remains available, and is well worth exploring.

Even on this debut, the elements that make Ben's music so endearing are very much present, from his unmistakable airy vocals and poetic lyrics, to the folk stylings augmented with light electronic touches. There's both a vital and a lullaby-esque quality to his work, that garners a charming nostalgia, but without seeming old-fashioned or generic.

And whilst he has gone on to produce a number of themed albums, including the aforementioned "Ghost" and the seminal "Family Trees" series, this first effort remains a heart-warming and enjoyable affair.
