Three out of the five members of Derby's now-defunct superstars Crash of Rhinos went on to form Holding Patterns, and this is their debut full-length, released in 2019.
Slimmer, sleeker, and less overly-intricate than their previous band, you can nevertheless hear where they've come from, as they ply their blend of indie / math rock and emo.
They certainly create a decent racket for a three-piece, as well as impressive soundscapes that intermingle with genuinely poppy moments and delicate breakdowns, and to my mind get the balance spot on.
As an aside, I've also just realised that they feature ex-members of The Little Explorer, whose debut on the excellent Pigdog Records I was a big fan of, so now I'm even sweeter on these guys...
