Dead Rejects - Songs for the Dead

Dead Rejects is the skacore / crack rock steady DIY project of Shane Sparacello, who has been releasing a steady stream of superb records for going on 9 years. Indeed, the last EP was only a few months ago, but I've chosen to post my favourite release, which is this 2014 record that compiles the first three mini-albums ("Sleeping is for Suckers", "Screaming By Myself", and "Positively Depressing") into one biggun'.

There are lots of elements at work here, with the frequent alternating between clean and guttural screamed crust-punk vocals a feature throughout varied (and at times simply epic) song-writing that interweaves swathes of ska, hardcore, metal, and punk, often with genuine emotional impact.

Yes, a large collection like this can get a bit long in the tooth, but it's just about listenable to in one sitting, and production is consistent across the collection helping to give it a cohesive feel, even if the short instrumentals do let you know when you've hit a new mini-album.

You could probably jump into Dead Rejects' discography anywhere, but this record, covering as it does these formative releases, seems like a good place to start.
