Today is International Women's Day, which given how the pandemic has disproportionately affected women is as needed as ever, and also notable insofar as a year ago it was one of the final large gatherings in Europe before the lockdowns kicked in. Another reminder that it's almost been a year.
Here in England today also marks what is supposedly the start of de-escalating the current lockdown, although sending all students across the country back to school on the same day, as opposed to staggering their return, and doing so a few weeks before the Easter holiday no less, seems like an awful idea. Hopefully I'm wrong. The stay-at-home order is still in place for now though, so the posts will continue for now as well.
Anyway, music! Today's post comes from Bristol's Caves, and features the instantly recognisable vocals (and guitar work) of ex-Flamingo 50 Lou Hanman, alongside bassist/vocalist Jonathan Minto, also of Dogeyed. Lou is now based in the US (and played in Worriers), but last I read the band is still going (or at least in hiatus) - indeed, they wrote their last album "Always Why" long distance.
Betterment, which was their second full-length, is a record of beautiful and brash and melodic indie punk rock, and in truth much in keeping with the rest of their output. The band has a distinctive sound, something that can't always be said in punk rock, and it was laid down expertly here, capturing the energy of their reportedly frantic live shows (I was sick the only time they played anywhere near me, so I never got to see them), leading to what is simply a cracking album.
