Radical Face / The Last Mile / Down and Outs / The Saffs

Happy Bandcamp Friday! If you are gonna purchase anything from Bandcamp, whether it be any of the fine releases that have been posted about on this 'ere page, or anything else that has caught your fancy, today is the day to do so, as the artists / labels get to keep more of your hard earned moolah.

I fancied posting more EPs / singles today, so let's jump right in.

Radical Face - Hidden Hollow, Vol. One

Hidden Hollow is the name of Ben Cooper (Radical Face)'s newish old-school monthly email mailout. It contains his musings on and examples of art and literature and is accompanied by new songs of his. It is a joy to receive in one's inbox, and I highly recommend you sign up at https://hiddenhollow.online.

This EP collects the first six songs from the mailout. I have previously written here about how I believe Ben Cooper to be one of the most brilliant songwriters of our time, so it should come as no surprise that I consider this essential. It's as warm and beautiful and touching and glorious as ever.

The Last Mile - II 7"

Despite this page having a very small reach, once or twice I have had "review" requests, but they've been Spotify links to music that isn't available for free / pay what you like download, which is kinda this page's thing. Albums are also this page's thing, but whatever, a request for a post from Chris Snelgrove (of All The Answers, Prevenge, and Whiskey Trench) is still the best one I've had thus far.

After releasing debut album "The Distance Between" in 2016 (as Chris Snelgrove & The Last Mile), here's a single from last year entitled "II" featuring two songs and two guest vocalists - Patty O'Lantern of Brutal Youth and Dragged In, and Scott Wade who was in Comeback Kid. The music is gruff melodic hardcore punk which is more than fine by me, and these songs certainly whet the appetite for the new LP which apparently they've just finished.

Down And Outs - Keep Walking 7"

I have mentioned Mark Magill a few times on this page, yet I haven't posted anything by the one project of his that seems to be a constant - the prolific Down And Outs. So, lets rectify that with their most recent release, a seven inch of catchy street / pop punk on the wonderful Brassneck Records.

Mark's band of merry Liverpool punks have been around for a while now, but this single feels to me like the most immediate thing they've put out, with memorable choruses and sing-a-long moments across all three songs here. What more could you ask for from a 7"?

The Saffs - Ladyboy Chaser

These glam punks were heroes of the Cambridge music scene in the late '90s, and I ADORED them. Their gig co-headlining with Hofman with Foxy Ramone supporting was up there with the best I have ever been to, and they meant so much to me, as much as any "bigger" band ever did. Frontmen Jazz and Greg went on to form Right Turn Clyde  / RTC and Neo respectively, but never really hit the heights they did together (not forgetting drummer Julia who went on to be in Beverley Kills, or bassist Paddy who went to France or something).

The six songs here were all mainstays of their live set, and each and every one of them still puts a big smile on my face even today.  If I was trying to be critical I might suggest the lyrics are a little corny, but I have such fond memories of belting them out off-key in the crowd whilst awkwardly happy-dancing away and I would happily do so again if ever given the chance.
