I first heard John Player Specials on their split with Harijan, and it's probably the latter's new album that prompted me to go back and dig this one out again, and it's lovely to be reminded just how good this record is, chock full of a blend of punk, reggae, and ska (and I'm not just saying that last one cos we've got punk with trumpets here).
The combination is infectious, and results in a record that rocks with both a ferocity and a groove that I don't often hear together. The different vocal styles complement each other well, and it's all wonderfully accomplished, not to mention soulful, touching, frantic, and both danceable and headbangable!
Yeah, this one is pretty damn essential.
