When a record is put out by the UK's All In Vinyl & Brassneck Records and Japan's Waterslide Records (three of my favourite labels) then I'm gonna sit up and take notice, which is what happened 5 years ago when all three banded together to release this, the debut of Swansea's Hot Mass (ex-33/Dividers/The Arteries).
Combining frantic punk with a touch of dirty rock 'n roll, this debut hits you like a freight train with opener "I Think I'm Done", a sneaky earworm if ever there was one, with it's single-line chorus and staccato guitar refrain. From there on in things don't exactly let up by much, although a little more melody does slip in from time to time, and the record is hardly a one-dimensional affair.
I kinda feel like if one day folks from a sludge metal band decided to form a punk band, they might end up sounding like Hot Mass, or at least end up drawing a lot of inspiration from them. This is grimey grungy visceral punk rock, and rock it most certainly does.
