Parisian duo* Trotski Nautique have been banding around their brand of minimalist lo-fi keyboard synth 8-bit bedroom pop for years now. On "Boucherie", their brand-new album, they've really hit their stride. We still get their signature off-kilter DIY 2 minute odd head-nod inducing nuggets, but this time it's a more consistent affair, reminiscent of Fonda 500's best.
Experimental, kitsch, fun, irreverent, and genuine, and with an emotional intelligence to boot, this is a wonderful album that's very welcome during these times. Alda's vocals are gorgeous throughout, and beyond those there are other moments of genuine beauty to be found here - especially the outro of "YC-PT30".
Trotski Nautique have recorded their fair share of covers (their version of George Michael's "Careless Whisper" is a personal favourite), and here it's Palace Music's "More Brother Rides" that gets "trotskified". Or "nautiqued", maybe?
If you're an anglophone like me you might well from time to time find yourself scratching your head trying to recall your schoolboy/girl French, as you swear to yourself that that song's called "Magic Rabbits" (spoiler alert: it is). But whether you understand all, some, or none of the lyrics, the music here is truly strong enough.
This would be an early contender for album of the year, if it hadn't come out at the very end of the last one...
