You don't often hear about "beauty" in punk, but every time I listen to Navel I'm taken aback by the sheer shimmering beauty present in so much of their music. It's there in the guitar sound that rings out, and in the breakdowns, and in the vocals and harmonies, and just in the brightness of their super-tight catchy-as-hell energetic non-saccharine pop-punk.
I was fortunate enough to see them on their last tour of the UK with Skimmer, and as I watched them play I remember feeling so deliriously happy.
Ok, gushing over, what do we have here? Well, it's not an album per se, but rather an album-length discography sampler that the excellent Bloated Kat Records put up to accompany their release of Navel's full discography on cassette.
With 3 songs from 1998's Uneasy and 1 from its reissue, 4 from 2004's Depend, and 6 from 2015's Heartache, this sampler provides a great introduction to the band and is easily listenable as an album in its own right, which just goes to show how consistent, if not exactly prolific, Navel are.
Genuinely one of my favourite bands on the planet.
