Mains & Motors - Kalani

I'll be honest, this record only initially grabbed my attention due to two of the songs "contain[ing] elements" of Jeff Rosenstock's "You, In Weird Cities", which is one of my favourite songs. Maybe that was the plan all along.

Whatever the case, it turns out this is a pretty decent power pop / indie record, with great production, and some damn catchy songs.

Lyrics are relatable, and I really like the first-person narrative style. I also appreciate the recurring themes present, be it something as simple as the "ohs" in the opening and closing tracks, or the trio of "Auckland (Or Some Other Kiwi City)", "A Letter to Your Next Lover", and "Hurricane", with the latter acting as the refrain for both of the other two.

If nothing else then, this record is certainly cohesive, but fortunately it also happens to be a rather enjoyable one too.
