Toronto's First Base play joyous power pop / pop-punk of the sped-up Beach Boys variety, with lots of sun-kissed harmonies and breezy tunes. This version of their 2013 debut features 15 (!) bonus tracks collecting all their previous output up to this album's release, including their self-titled tape, the "I've Got A Girl" 7", the "She's Boy Crazy" 7", the "I Saw Her First" 7", the "Party, Party, Party" tape, plus a track from a compilation. The quality on these tracks varies, but they are nice to have.
Things are way more consistent over the 12 songs / 25 mins of the original album, which is pretty likely to put a smile on your face if you're a fan of pop-punk acts such as The Travoltas, or to a lesser extent the Ramones.
Lyrics are on the simplistic side, with songs about summertime and girlfriends making up the bulk of what's here; not exactly sophisticated stuff, but then there was never any pretence of being so, and they certainly fit the style.
Overall this record is genuinely pleasant, enjoyable, and lots of fun, and sometimes that's all you really want.
