I've previously posted about Misfortune Cookie (check out their brilliant debut album if you haven't already) but not the band that ¾ of them came from, so let's address that with Bear Trade's final full-length.
Often (and rightly) compared with melodic hardcore bands such as Leatherface or Iron Chic, Bear Trade nevertheless had a slightly gentler sound, with Greg Robson's North Eastern lilt less abrasive than some of their contemporaries. Maybe I'm splitting hairs, they were still in the "gruff punk" stable, but I found their sound warm and, to be frank, comforting.
I'm not splitting hairs though when I say "Silent Unspeakable" is a superb album. Charming lyrics relating to a slightly maturer stage of life and the hopes and musings associated with that abound, conveyed with heart and humour, and all backed up with that guitar sound. This is proper UK melodic hardcore at its finest; a wonderful, heartfelt, understated masterpiece, and a fitting culmination of an outstanding band's output.
