Vancouver duo The Wind Whistles' first album in 11 years is set to be released on Thursday, so it seems like a good time to revisit their debut "Window Sills", an album that was the first to be released by the wonderful but now (I think?) sadly defunct netlabel aaahh records.
To describe them as simply folk would be lazy (and primarily based on them using a lot of acoustic instruments). Back in the day they described themselves as "a cross of The Lemonheads and Violent Femmes", and that's probably not too far off; The Wind Whistles have the pop sensibilities, the emotive awareness, not to mention the slight awkwardness, to make such a comparison stick.
There are some really great moments on this record, including the poignancy of "River", the upbeat melancholy of "Communication's Dead", the slight abrasiveness of "Where Does the Garbage Go?" or the never-truer sentiment of "Good Friends Won't Rip You Off".
So, sit back and enjoy this (and their 2009 second album "Animals are People Too"), and look forward to Thursday...
