Liverpool's Pardon Us are a cracking punk band, and also just happen to be some of the friendliest, loveliest folks. "Wait" is their debut album from last year, and comes on the tail of a few singles, a couple of EPs, and a split EP with Only Strangers.
Existing on the melodic hardcore edge of pop-punk, Pardon Us are certainly devoid of any North American saccharine. Vocals are mostly edgy, musicianship is tight when it needs to be, and the band plays with intent.
Song topics cover social issues, as well as a retort to casual fascism ("If the Black Shirt Fits"), positivity in the face of adversity both past and present ("Thankful" and "It's Been a Phil Ochs Kind of Day"), and a rather amusing ode to being in a band ("We Aren't The Champions"). They've even managed to pen a song about losing loved ones ("Signing Out") that is as catchy as it is poignant.
Pardon Us are not a band that need to be excused then, far from it. With "Wait" they've put out an assured, exciting, and memorable debut full-length, one that reinforces their position as one of the UK's top punk bands right now.
I can't wait for the follow-up.
