Amanda Palmer is a prolific artist with a large and passionate fan base - unsurprising given her songwriting skills, sheer talent, not to mention some major-label "backing" in the early days. This, her 2nd album from 2012, was crowdfunded through kickstarter and at the time was the most successful campaign by any musician on the platform. There were multiple versions of the album released, with this particular one featuring 3 out of the 4 bonus tracks from the "kickstarter" version, in addition to the 15 tracks / 70 odd minutes of the core record. EDIT: The Bandcamp version is now just the regular 15 song one, but see below for a link to 19 song version.
Not a brief listen then, but a very rewarding one.
Palmer's singing style is wildly varied, and includes sharp staccato enunciations, breathy lullaby-esque intimacy, pseudo-conversational crooning, and the knock-your-socks-off belting out of those built-up-to moments.
With her band The Grand Theft Orchestra, formed for this period in her career, the music is equally diverse, taking cues from pop, polka, orchestral, new wave, and punk to name but a few, with horns, strings, and synth in addition to guitars, bass, drums, and Palmer's signature piano / keyboards.
It's a striking and impressive body of work, possibly over-produced, but certainly in keeping with a larger than life show-woman who also goes by "Amanda Fucking Palmer".
