Before she was in Dear Everyone and Misfortune Cookie (whose album I wrote about here), Helen Chambers released this full length of folk / Americana / trad. country, replete with her signature vocal style.
As mentioned when writing about Misfortune Cookie, I think Helen's voice takes a little adjusting to (specifically the tremolo effect that I referred to before as her "warble"), but maybe it's just me. At any rate, once you do (or once I did) her vocals are simply glorious.
Penny Arcade is a mostly-acoustic album full of charming and poignant folk songs, and features El Morgan and Kelly Kemp dotted throughout on backing vocals, plus Chuck Ragan on the a cappella "Banners". But the focus of course is Helen herself, with the album providing a showcase for her compelling songwriting and sublime vocal range.
