Canadian Jon Creeden blasts out Melodic Punk / Beard Punk numbers with his band The Flying Hellfish, and I was tempted to post their most recent full-length "Stall", but as much as I like that record, I absolutely love this solo folk punk album from 2013, so I'm going with that.
Joined on backing vocals by Kaitlyn Victoria Bean and Patrick Neary from Brutal Youth, this is a wonderful collection of catchy acoustic songs, with the kind of warm gravelly vocals that are often referred to as "whisk(e)y soaked" (or at least rinsed), and memorable, sing-a-long choruses. Plus that cover art just kills.
Opener "One Coast to Another" features most of the commonalities you'll find here; pensive lyrics on themes of travel, distance, relationships, and life, an earworm of a chorus, and backing vocals that when present genuinely add something special, usually to the bridge.
I've made it all sound a bit formulaic, and in some ways I guess it is, but it's certainly a formula that works, and one that's more than capable of holding up over the 12 songs here, and over repeated listenings at that.
