Just Friends took the energy, the slightly abrasive vocals of lead singer Sam Kless, and the sheer sense of fun that were all on show from their debut album, and added better production, and more significantly another singer in Brianda Goyos Leรณn, whose gorgeous soaring vocals take things to a whole new level.
And yes, the musical direction has changed somewhat too. Comparisons to the Red Hot Chilli Peppers aren't completely lazy, although Just Friends are adding their groove / funk to indie-punk as opposed to rock.
The brass section adds another element, although it should be clear that Just Friends are not a ska band. If I were to make one criticism, I'm not a massive fan of the intro and "intermission" tracks - they seem more like "in jokes" for those more intimate with the band, but that would be my only complaint.
This is a stellar album, with the aforementioned humour contrasting with some genuinely emotionally touching moments, just as the vocals from Leรณn contrast (and complement) those of Kless.
