"Any song you can play, I can play ska" is the mantra of Skatune Network, and is borne out with the myriad of genres ska-ified on this record. The ska-cover project of Jeremy Hunter (or JER) who also plays in We Are The Union and The Bruce Lee Band, Skatune Network takes aim here at 15 popular singles (which given the album title is probably of no surprise) with an often startling faithfulness to the original versions.
Getting the ska treatment this time around are songs by Capital Cities, Soulja Boy, Carly Rae Jepsen, 100 Gecs, Christina Aguilera, Lizzo, Donald Glover, Doja Cat, Billie Eilish, One Direction, Charli XCX & Troye Sivan, Owl City, Cascada, Britney Spears, and Taylor Swift.
With a host of guest vocalists and musicians adding variety to each track, not to mention genuinely outstanding production, I could easily see these versions being enjoyed by fans of the originals and ska-aficionados alike, and as an album there's a lot of fun to be had here, unless of course you can't stand the songs themselves.
But hey, I just found myself enjoying "Toxic" for the first time ever, so who knows?
