Spoonboy - The Papas

Spoonboy was the solo project of singer/songwriter and frontman of The Max Levine Ensemble David Combs, who also co-fronts Somnia. He's since stopped performing under this moniker, so I guess that qualifies this album as the final Spoonboy full-length.

There is something so wonderfully open and honest and disarmingly charming about Combs' songwriting. His lyrics are both personal and political, often taking narrative form, covering topics of gender, masculinity, society, and Combs' upbringing and his absent father.

The musical backing is varied; sometimes just a lone electric guitar (which given the strength of the songs is genuinely enough) and other times drums will join, or horns, or indeed a full band. As such, this probably falls under the auspices of indie, punk, and even pop.

"The Papas" is a very strong album, and one that certainly holds up 10 years down the line.
