The debut solo LP from Anika Pyle of katie ellen and Chumped (RIP) is a heartstring-pulling spoken word / synth-folk-pop emotional roller-coaster, focussing as it does on grief and loss, and in particular Pyle's own grieving process following the sudden death of her father.
It is a disarmingly beautiful and poignant body of work, with Pyle's candid poetry interspersed in amongst her enchanting musical compositions and affecting vocals. The record also features recordings of her late grandmother's learned advice.
"Wild River" then is evidently a deeply personal project, yet remains accessible with its highly relatable subject matter and Pyle's openness, not to mention her aptitude as a songwriter. It is most certainly a memorable release.
