"Ways of Hearing" is the 2020 debut full-length from probably one of the worst-named bands around. Fortunately, their name is the only criticism I have.
Playing a blend of shoegaze and folk (or "Slowcore", apparently) the band create gorgeous layers combining low-in-the-mix, deadpan, and soaring guy/gal vocals with violin, bass, bells, keyboard, drums, and guitars, that all gradually build into these wonderful melodic cacophonies. It's engrossing to hear the different parts ebb and flow over each other, something that the band do exceptionally well.
Outliers to this blueprint take the form of the instrumental bell interlude "Winston's Theme" and the subdued album closer "Everyone Around Us", but both songs are still quite beautiful.
If a dose of melancholy in your folk-tinged sonic soundscape appeals then this is genuinely a record not to be missed.
