Back in February last year, when we were starting to realise that maybe things really were going awry, Massachusetts' Oldsoul dropped an indie-rock album par excellence, but it kinda passed me by, probably cos of everything that was going on. It was much later that I got into it properly.
And with beautiful vocals, superb musicianship and songwriting that isn't afraid to go somewhere out-of-the-way yet remains catchy, I'm very glad I did. This is a record to really spend some time with; it's one of those that takes a few spins to "get", but then that's often true for many of my favourite albums.
Whether you're listening to a full on rock number such as opener "Like No Surprise" or a toe-tapping string-backed lullaby such as "Wilderness (Clothed in Mystery)" you'll find both honest, self-reflective lyrics alongside narrative-fuelled ones, and just astounding quality across the board.
