Been thinking about posting this for a while, and as Rad Girlfriend Records recently announced they are doing a re-release, remastered, for its 10 year anniversary, I figured I'd best get on and share the original.
Focused around frontman Jesse Thorson (of Pretty Boy Thorson & the Falling Angels), The Slow Death are a super group of sorts, and on this record include Mikey Erg (of The Ergs), Patrick Costello (from Dillinger Four), and Annie Sparrows (from The Soviettes).
Name dropping over, what we've got here is a toe-tapping gruff punk record, raucous and fun, with a slight twang of country somewhere in there. I do wish, given the talent on offer, it was a slightly more varied record, but I suspect that's more a reflection on Thorson than the other members, by which I mean the songwriting is in keeping with his other projects. Whatever the case, the band does what they do well, and it's certainly a solid record, and one that some people adore, as demonstrated by the reissue. It's also great drinking music...
