A confession: at first I didn't "get" Leeds' Buen Chico. I mean, I thought they were fine, but nothing special. Certainly nothing to get excited about. But sometimes it takes just one song to remove the veil from one's eyes, and for me that song was "I Want Good Things For You", a multifaceted 3½ minute epic from this very album that is achingly beautiful and certainly made me take notice.
Of course one song doth not an album make, but fortunately with this, their third full length (and first in 8 years), Buen Chico produced a varied, engaging, and at times quite resplendent collection of indie-rock, with some truly superb moments.
Granted the riff from "No Money Down" is reminiscent of the Underground Theme from Super Mario Bros., and I'm not sure both parts of "Hey Job!" are completely necessary, but these are minor gripes (if they are gripes at all, you might love Super Mario), and the timeless classic feel of many of the songs here is just delightful. Plus the band can rock out when they want to.
Gorgeous.
