Salt Lake City's Baby Ghosts take the ghost theme pretty seriously as far as their lyrics, song titles, and album names go, but they have a lot of fun with it, and it never gets old, probably helped by the music being so damn good.
Ghost Walk is a collection of rarities, demos, b-sides and covers, and has a pretty different feel to their regular albums, which usually leap out of the gates.
Instead, the first four tracks here are stripped back bare versions that draw you in slowly, but the strength of the songs is still more than evident. A Memory Map live cover later, and the 2nd half brings us back to the band's signature effervescent frenetic style of pop punk, with what I assume to be a couple of album outtakes - they are studio quality at any rate. And then we're into two live originals (the former I think otherwise unreleased), and a live Cranberries cover.
Now, had the band's outstanding "Maybe Ghosts" album been available for free / pwyw, would I still be posting this record? Probably not, but it's still very much worth a download. Those opening four songs really do let the songwriting shine through and are quite beautiful, the live tracks are endearing, whilst the studio tracks give you a sense of what their other records are like and are great to have.
It's an enjoyable collection.
