Whale Song: A Land-locked Love Story

This is a project from story-writer and musician Rebecca Sharp and songwriter and musician / singer Mark Magill (from Down And Outs and countless others), joined by musician / singer Annamarie Owens (from Barbie Shop), narrator Cathy Butterworth, and illustrator Gill Smith.

Together they tell the charming tale of a whale who comes ashore in Liverpool and falls in love with a librarian, through spoken word, song, and animation, although the latter is sadly missing in this download.

The music is light and folky, and much of the time akin to lullabies with the use of harp, toy piano, and glockenspiel to name but three, and features the gorgeous vocals of Owens alongside the not-quite-gorgeous-but-still-nice vocals of Magill.

The spoken word tracks are accompanied by many of the motifs found in the songs, and Butterworth's narration is spot on with her Liverpudlian lilt adding authenticity to a grounded but otherwise fantastical story.

This is a wonderful, heart-warming, and very special project.
