I've never really been into 8-bit / Chiptune, although of course it's fun to hear covers of songs you're familiar with sound like they're being played by a Gameboy (like the "Punk Goes 8-bit" compilations for example). But in terms of original music, Crying is the only band incorporating this style that I like who come to mind.
Until now that is. quotient combines 8-bit and dream pop into engaging instrumental compositions. Early tracks like "Waves" and "Clarity" are easy to digest, with bright and memorable tunes, and contrast with others, which may well spend their existence exploring a single motif.
In spite of the beats (especially on "Cloudhopper"... SO MANY BEATS), this is an album to relax and unwind to, and in that context tracks like album closer "(Midnight Eternal)" (which basically drones for 15 minutes) make a lot more sense.
Taken as a whole this is an accomplished record and one that I've no doubt I'll be revisiting every so often.
