You'd expect an album featuring over 40 contributing musicians to be pretty varied, and you'd be right. This is folk- and pop-punk, indie rock, and wacky pop all rolled into one, with moments of virtuoso guitar solos, gang vocals, orchestral and brass accompaniment, twee singalongs, breathy introspection, and kazoos.
There's a sense of camaraderie here, a warmth that radiates from each song, even in the more madcap breakdowns. It's a charming and endearing record, and was no doubt a labour of love.
If I were to have one complaint, it would be that anthem "Onions" is too short; I'm always left wanting more of that song. But it's a minor gripe; this is a fun, rewarding, and quite epic listen. And it rocks.
It is indeed a "mega gem" of a record.
