Heights NS is the handle of Floridian producer, multi-instrumentalist, and rapper Phillip Carre. On this, his 2017 album, he blends elements from multiple genres, spanning hip hop, trip hop, rock, new wave, synth pop, soul, electronic, post punk, industrial, orchestral, and in all likelihood more besides, whilst adding his warm vocals, both rapped and sung, into the mix.
Lyrics often pertain to racial & social inequality, and the end of warfare, but there are also some that are more introspective, and overall there's a lot of positivity to be found here.
It really is a varied album and, whilst such eclecticism could get messy, in this case the production holds it all together, and there's a coherent atmosphere throughout. With the potential to appeal to a wide range of musical tastes, it's nevertheless an album that takes a few listens to appreciate (or at least to begin to appreciate) all the different elements present; something that's true of many of my favourite records.
