Dublin punks Chewing on Tinfoil eschewed the bulk of the ska-punk vibe that was so prominent on their previous releases on this, their 2013 album, instead developing their emotive punk sound, with some seriously impressive results.
Irish bands (amongst others) can be prone from time to time to americanise their vocals, but there's no such tomfoolery here, and singer Stu Daly emotes with his native accent, and it's quite simply beautiful.
Songs like opener "Fuck Team Sports" are punk as, but are complemented with some truly heart-wrenching numbers like "Let Me Let You Down" and "Holy Communion". There's even time for pseudo crust punk as found on "Just Like Me", and some straight up rock songs like "Sons & Mothers".
I'm not a fan of the connotations of "mature" when it comes to punk, but this truly is a mature effort in the best way; well written songs, each deserving their place on an engaging and cohesive record, full of passion, strong musicianship, and engaging lyrics.
This is a stellar album; heartfelt, genuine, and bullshit-free.
