Lukestar - Lake Toba

The first time I heard Norway's Lukestar I thought they had a female vocalist, but no, I was in fact hearing the falsetto stylings of frontman Truls Heggero.

This is Lukestar's second album (out of three) from 2008, and is named after a lake in Sumatra, Indonesia, located in the caldera of a supervolcano, possibly appropriate for a record that mixes post-hardcore and indie rock with Heggero's aforementioned voice; a peaceful yet at times explosive combination.

Punchy production, intricate and frantic guitar work, and soaring (and at times ethereal) vocals abound, alongside a hell of an ear for a tune. A delicate balance, but one that the band pulled off expertly, leaving them with a cohesive, intriguing and, for want of a better word, satisfying sophomore effort.

The album earned Lukestar the Best Rock Band award at the 2008 Spellemannprisen (Norwegian equivalent of the Grammy Awards).

As an aside, Heggero would go on to sign for major label Parlophone as a solo artist once Lukestar disbanded.
