Entertainment for the Braindead is Berlin's prolific multi-instrumentalist and singer-songwriter Julia Kotowski. "Roadkill" is her 2010 exploration of the banjo, and my personal favourite from her extensive catalogue (the rest of which can be found on her bandcamp, on the Free Music Archive, and archive.org).
Book-ended by the "Sirens" instrumentals, the 8 remaining songs showcase Kotowski's precise and delicate instrumentation, her cumulative, flourishing arrangements, and her gorgeously airy yet at times edgy vocals. Highlights include the title track, which could almost be considered abrasive with its brazen lyrics yet is so very catchy, tracks like "Dry Wood" and "Relapse" which spellbind with their dream-like hypnotic reverie, and the oh-so-fun "Pirates", which is just spot on. "When You Were Young" is a bit droll in comparison to what else is here, and feels a bit out of place, almost tacked on the end there, like it didn't fit anywhere else. Still, it's pleasant enough, and just goes to show the quality of the other songs on offer here. 𝗦𝘁𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗼𝗿 𝗗𝗼𝘄𝗻𝗹𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝗙𝗿𝗲𝗲 / 𝗡𝗮𝗺𝗲 𝗬𝗼𝘂𝗿 𝗣𝗿𝗶𝗰𝗲 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺: http://eftb.bandcamp.com/album/roadkill
