Madrid's Wild Animals popped up on my radar after excellent Japanese label Waterslide Records co-released their debut album "Basements: Music to Fight Hyprocracy" (and their "First Songs EP" beforehand, but I missed that one at the time).
I loved their brand of fast, punk-tinged indie rock, so when I found myself moving to the Spanish capital, I made sure I caught 'em live as often as I could, including the launch party for this, their most recent record. "The Hoax" continues the band's penchant for detailed album covers and catchy hooks. Jamie's clean singing style remains, whilst Paula's backing vocals have been given greater prominence this time around (and she also sings lead on "Interrupted Girl"). The production has been turned up a notch and, if I'm honest, so has the songwriting. All in all it's just a more cohesive affair than their previous offerings, even if my absolute favourite songs by the band can still be found on those earlier efforts...
